GMTCC Forestry Building
Hardwick, VT
Honorable Mention, Public Building Category | Vermont AIA Design Awards
This project was designed and built as a component of a larger $10 million Technology Center expansion. The facility is constructed with local materials including multiple types of wood siding and regionally harvested heavy timber framing and wood harvested from the site by forestry program students. Large areas of glazing afford wide forest vistas. Daylighting in all labs and classrooms minimizes the need for artificial light. Special design attention was given to minimizing site disturbance and removal of existing trees and utilizing existing grading to the greatest extent possible. The existing cross country ski trails were maintained just feet from the rear deck. An energy efficient wood boiler is used as the primary source of heat and as a learning tool for students who cut the wood for fuel from the surrounding forest.
North Country Career Center Land Laboratory
Newport, VT
This new rugged facility houses laboratories, classrooms, and storage for agriculture, natural resources and forestry instruction. Its dark green metal siding allows it to visually blend into the wooded site. A row of clerestory windows provides ample daylighting in the learning labs.
GMTCC Community Education Center
Hyde Park, VT
This multi-purpose space is in a regional technical center, but has the capabilities and aesthetics of a corporate conference facility. Designed with integrated technology, moveable furnishings, operable partitions, and a banquet kitchen, this facility is an ideal place to hold meetings, medical trainings, and receptions. To allow for after-hours community use, the conference space, restrooms, and storage are all organized around a central public lobby. We worked closely with the owner to ensure that all technology infrastructure, including an audio/video system, acoustic ceiling panels, and multi-zoned lighting was elegantly incorporated into the design.
